Dakota (formerly Sophie) was born in South Korea on a farm that breeds dogs to be eaten at various festivals. Saved by Humane Society International last February, Dakota was flown to Canada with her sister when she was only 2 months old.

Unfortunately, although she was saved at a relatively young age, her body is already in bad shape. Given the reproduction conditions of her parents, Dakota suffered from several genetic problems. In addition to these problems, she was also malnourished and has issues related to her environmental upbringing.

Transferred to an organization in Ontario, Dakota has an impressive medical record. She suffers from skin problems, various infections, malformations (she’s a hermaphrodite!), growth problems, etc. She has undergone several tests and has already received several different treatments for her various ailments. In fact, she has spent a good part of her life at the vet’s so far! She has even spent several weeks with splints on her front paws because they haven’t grown properly.

Around the age of 8 months, once she seemed to be in perfect health, she was transferred to L'Auberge Zen to be adopted. There, Dakota found an adoptive family. Unfortunately, she was brought back a few days later because she was limping.

With a strong possibility of kneecap dislocation, L'Auberge Zen therefore asked for help. We have offered them to take care of Dakota's medical care since it is our mission is to help animals with medical problems.

Dakota was evaluated a few days later by one of the orthopedic surgeons with whom we work frequently; Dr. Benamou at the DMV Veterinary Center.

After evaluation, it finally turned out that the medical needs of Dakota were much worse than we thought...bilateral kneecap dislocations, bilateral severe hip dysplasia with subluxation on one side and a possible torn ligament in one of her knees.

Every move she makes causes her to suffer. Including but not limited to sitting, laying down, and standing up.

At that point, there are only two solutions: we can euthanize her to alleviate her from the pain or she may undergo several surgeries. The horribly high costs of these surgeries made us hesitate for a long time. However, all of her conditions can be treated and cured, leaving Dakota with an excellent quality of life afterwards. Since we have always promised to never make any decisions based on the cost of treatment, we decided to stay true to our words and give Dakota a chance!
