APPEAL TO SAVE THE SAN GUILLERMO CHURCH OF BACOLOR, PAMPANGA, PHILIPPINES.
Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines on June 15, 1991 wherein an estimated 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide and ash particles blasted more than 12 miles (20 km) high into the atmosphere. Bacolor, a town in Pampanga, Philippines, was practically erased from the map due to the onslaught of lahar which covered the entire landscape of Bacolor as well as the death of a great number of its residents. On September 3, 1995, lahar flow from the slopes of Mt. Pinatubo buried the San Guillermo church at half of its 12-m height prompting its more than 50,000 town residents to evacuate to safer grounds in resettlement areas.
Recently, the belfry of the 440 year old San Guillermo church started to tilt. The Department of Public Works and Highways of the Philippines has answered the appeal of the San Guillermo parish by forming a team of engineers to assess the structural integrity of the bell tower and determine if it poses any threat to the church. The church may also be digitally scanned to determine the extent of the tilting but this would cost about Php500,000.00 which the parish does not have at this time.
It is for this reason that the San Guillermo parish makes an appeal for donations to raise the initial amount of Php500,000.00 needed for the digital scanning of the belfry of the church and thereafter, to plea for further donations to cover the total amount needed for the repairs not only of the belfry but the restoration of the church as well.
Thank you.
Very truly yours,
