Save Our Siding! (SOS)
HISTORIC VALENTOWN MUSEUM
(http://HistoricValentownMuseum.org)
When many people give a little bit of change, they make big changes happen.
ABOUT THE MUSEUM.
In 1879, Levi and Alanson Valentine constructed a 4-story shopping plaza and community center, complete with underground stables! This rare example of 19th century architecture has remained almost unaltered since its original construction.
Valentown contains literally thousands of artifacts, objects and heirlooms representing the19th century history of the local areas of Victor and Rochester in New York.
The property is 100% run and maintained by unpaid volunteer staff who lovingly dedicate their personal time and labor. The museum is not supported financially by any local municipality. All of our funding relies on the generosity of donors, our members, the occasional grant, volunteer contributions, and tour fees and tips collected from visitors.
Notice in the photo below all the grayish patches?
Those are areas where wire has been affixed to the siding to discourage the birds trying to house in the building!
VISION STATEMENT
Using the Historic Valentown site the Victor Historical Society exhibits, promotes and teaches to the public the concepts and applications of American commerce and the community story, past and present from this area. Historic Valentown creates interest and instills appreciation in hometown business and community using its historic collection of documents and American made artifacts housed within Valentown hall and other settings on the site.
WHY THE FUNDRAISER?
The original wood siding on the Museum is century old barn wood over 135 years old! It is in serious need of repairs. In some places, birds are even getting into the Museum through holes in the siding!
The state of our siding is creating a destructive situation endangering the building itself and all of its contents. Our siding is the most important element to keep the building standing. The repairs are going to be costly and our desire is to match the existing siding as closely as possible. We would prefer to locate and purchase re-purposed barn wood in keeping with our recycling values. Costs for siding repairs must cover the siding & contractors, plus the 4-5 story very tall scaffolding that will be necessary.
IMAGES OF SOME OF THE SIDING DAMAGE
In this case below, it wasn't birds. It was wind that took off a few boards. Then a RACOON scaled the building and ripped off more boards and helped him/herself into the building!! The raccoon has been "encouraged" to vacate the premises. But the holes are still there...
To understand the scope and scale of the repairs needed on our beloved museum, please enjoy this YouTube video of a drones view of the Hall.
