WHAT IS THE ROXY?

The Roxy Lounge & Culture Club is exactly that…a club…and of course, a labour of love for our pal and Roxy founder, Stevie B. Its members ensure that the lease on the space is paid. Stevie B provides style, love, dedication and concierge services extraordinaire; and the whole community gets to share in this wonderfully quirky playhouse.

The Roxy’s motto is “Music, Movies and More.” Over the years Gabriolans have attended movies, concerts, slideshows, plays, coffee houses, dances, workshops, private parties, meetings, readings, comedy nights and even the occasional sporting event on the Roxy’s big 13 foot screen. It is a damn-fine, snazzy, theatre; boasting 50 red velvet movie seats, a vintage JBL / McIntosh sound system, retro couches, eclectic, flamboyant sculptures and a fun, art deco, ambience. What’s not to love?

Everyone is welcome at the Roxy! You don’t need to be a member to enjoy this unique entity. Anyone can rent the Roxy for a song (That is to say it is very affordable. I don’t know that actually serenading Stevie B will get you anywhere.) or attend a movie night or any number of the spectacular events that the Roxy hosts each and every week.

HISTORY

2007-2012 was the heyday of the original Gabriola Roxy. It was a meeting place right in the heart of town where performers from far and near graced the stage. It was a place where up-and-comers cut their teeth and where the greats came to soak up some of that down-homey Gabriola love. It was a place where we watched movies, danced, held parties and did what a small community does best: support one another. The place had a heart-beat! Yes it did. And the life-blood? Mr. Stevie B.

For 5 years Stevie B kept this lovely circus breathing and singing along until one sad day in 2012 he announced that he could single-handedly support this Gabriola treasure no more.

And so it was gone…but not forgotten. In his Roxy Raves (a weekly newspaper article) Stevie B told us “if we really want it, the Roxy shall return.” Well, we really wanted it! Islanders started to pester…ahem…I mean encourage Stevie B. to bring back our Roxy; and so The Friends of The Roxy was born. It would take a yearly commitment of $120 from 200 Club Members to see the re-birth of Gabriola’s favourite meeting place. As Stevie B likes to say “Gabriola does provide” and so in the spring of 2016, we saw the return of the Roxy at its new location at Twin Beaches Mall. It was bigger! It was better! It had all of the original charm and more!

And here we are at today and I am delighted to say The Roxy is still going strong! I’m going to guess that it hosts between 150-300 events per year. Oh it’s not as visible as it once was and there are Islanders who still haven’t figured out what the heck it is; but we’ll educate them won’t we?

IN CLOSING

Our community is a wonderful and unique place. Island life is not like life anywhere else and I am willing to bet the reason YOU chose to call this place your home is because YOU are pretty wonderful and unique too. Did I hit the nail on the head?

I think it is so very important that we actively preserve the things that make island life different…special. The Roxy is one of those things.

When I think of some of the insignificant things that I blow 10 bucks on in a month I feel quite pleased with myself that I chose to become a Friend of The Roxy. Now that 10 bucks supports my friends, my community, all of the incredibly talented performers and the collective dream to have a meeting place to call our very own. Damn I’m good!

Won’t you join me? Let’s show Stevie B just how right he is…Gabriola does provide.
