Save the EMF Community!

The EMF Buidling in Central Square, Cambridge has served an important role as a space for artists and musicians to practice their crafts for over a decade. Our community has flourished into the heart of a local music and arts scene, facilitating new friendships and growing collaborations. The EMF community brings together musicians and artists from the greater Boston area, from all around the world, and from all walks of life. Our building hosts over 200 tenants renting affordable work spaces, ever more rare in our rapidly gentrifying city. It also houses a full recording studio, multiple smaller studios, dozens of rehearsal rooms, open spaces for artists to congregate, visual arts studios, and a network of irreplaceable social connections.

In 2016, our building was purchased by Ledgemoor, a company owned by real estate developer John P. DiGiovanni of Trinity Property Management. Tenants were told that there was a lease on the building that would continue until 2020, with the option to renew, but this lease was somehow broken without our knowledge. Non-disclosure agreements were signed behind our backs. We've been given no access to these documents and no opportunity to negotiate or appeal. In late February, 2018, tenants at the EMF received abrupt notices to quit from Trinity Property Management, and were told they were to vacate the building by the end of April.

Since being given our eviction orders, members of the EMF community have launched a campaign to push back and try to hold on to our essential lifeline. We depend on the EMF building, it's the last building of its kind in Cambridge and it plays a vital role at heart of the Cambridge Cultural District. If we lose this building we lose so much more than just bricks and walls. We lose our culture, our livelihoods, our home away from home.

After communicating with the mayor and addressing City Hall, we've been given a one-month extension. Tenants are now being told they can stay until the end of May. We intend to use this borrowed time to explore all options and fight to keep our community alive.

If you think the livelihoods of ordinary people are more important than the profits of the wealthy and the powerful; if you think the arts and music are an essential aspect of our culture, without which we don't even have a culture; if you think Central Square, Cambridge will no longer have the right to call itself the “Cultural District” after the last arts building has been bought up by developers, then join our cause.

Help us keep our community from being shattered. Help us hold on to our spaces. Help us make Cambridge the vibrant, diverse, creative city it claims to be.
