Save Jewelers Row!

In August of 2016 it suddenly came to light that Toll City Living had been quietly negotiating a real estate deal to build a large condo tower right at the corner of 7th and Sansom.  To achieve this, they plan to demolish 5 functional, structurally sound, and occupied buildings along Jewelers Row.  These buildings are valuable as part of the Historic fabric of the neighborhood and the Center City East Historic District, and also as part of the special economy of Jewelers Row.  The demolition of these buildings would endanger other historic structures nearby (700 Sansom Street, 701 Walnut Street) and the construction of a new large building on the site would disrupt foot traffic and business for Jewelers along Jewelers Row for years to come.  This could be the end of the speical economic subsystem that is Jewelers Row, the oldest diamond district in America.  Residents, building owners, and business owners now feel that it is time to have legal representation to fight this proposed development project.

Many people have taken a variety of actions (appeals, nominations, community meetings) to try and stop or alter this project.  This campaign is a new effort in our grassroots campaign.   Our next step is legal action taken up by business owners, tenants, and residents of Jewelers Row.  This type of action may be the best chance to stop the demolition of 702-710 Sansom Street.  We want to show the developers and the City that THIS PLACE MATTERS and the people of Philadelphia think so too.  We will not simply step aside and allow "progress" to destroy what is dear to us.

We need money to get started with our lawyer right away!  A legal representative will help ensure that the devlopers are not making up their own rules (for example, trying to use "Unity of Use" to create a large enough footprint for a 29 story building the same way "air rights" would be used, but "air rights" are not allowed in Philadelphia) and steam-rolling over neighbors' oppositions to the project.
Any money that is donated beyond our necessity will be donated to the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia for future Jewelers Row preservation effors and other Historic Preservation endeavours.

THIS PLACE MATTERS to us, those that want to Save Jewelers Row, and we would be so grateful for your help.
