Save The Torres Family

On November 12th at approximately 10:03 pm, Los Angeles Police officers responded to the intersection of Florence Ave and Dalton Ave for a hit and run incident involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, witnesses pointed in urgency to the victim, Maria Torres, who was bloodied and incapacitated laying on the street.

Maria Torres was crossing southbound Denker Street in the crosswalk with her children when the suspect vehicle, a black older model Honda, ran a red light striking the victim and her 11-year-old son. Maria fell underneath the vehicle and was dragged for approximately 60 yards causing her to be hospitalized for over a month. She has broken legs, wrists, arms, back, rib cage, collar bone, and multiple lacerations all over her body due to the violent collision.

Witnesses stated that, as the suspect drove off at a high rate of speed, he stuck his middle finger out of the driver’s window.

South Traffic Detectives received the report and wanted to assist the family by providing the children gifts for the holidays. Although the family greatly appreciated the offer, what they need help with the most is funds to pay rent so the children have a home for the holidays. The children asked that we help their mom be able to pay for rent.

Since Maria Torres is a single mother who has not been able to work due to her injuries, making it a challenge for her to pay rent since her hospitalization.

Therefore, the Los Angeles Police Department South Traffic Division is fundraising to help make their (The Torres Family: Maria Torres) rent payment ($850 per month) for a couple of months (until their mother can go back to work which is estimated after she is able to walk again and regain use of her hands) so the family can avoid being evicted and make their holiday wishes come true.

The original goal was 5K but after visiting the family, we realized that injuries sustained were going to take much longer than anticipated to heal. She can not walk or utilize her hands yet, and she is still in so much pain that she cannot sleep. Additionally, she has outstanding medical bills which is why we raised the goal. Detectives are trying to help the family relocate to a first floor apartment.

The family is extremely thankful for all donations. Ms. Torres stated that after she was hit, she opened her eyes, saw her children pleading for her to stay awake and open her eyes over her. At that moment, all she wanted was God to give her one more chance, to survive, so that she can provide for her family. She never thought that God would also bless her with the generosity of many people.
