Help grow a Makerspace in JAX, FL

Donation protected
Scihouse Inc is a non profit makerspace with a focus on bioremediation, electronics, and woodworking located in Jacksonville, Florida

We’re Jacksonville natives and new arrivals with backgrounds in biology, chemistry, medicine, physics, and programming.

We’ve gotten started with money from our pocket and we’re taking that next step towards stability.

We want to raise funds to maintain the space that we currently have and add to our small yet impressive library of tools and materials.

Our mission at Scihouse is to educate, empower, and give the people of Jacksonville access to tools and a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math)  style education that may not always be easily accessible

Located in the Mixon Studio space in the Railyard District, we share a warehouse with other creators and doers, including Matthew Marmor (Bladework and Leatherworking), and Ryan Rowe (Blacksmith )

The goal is to maintain and grow a community of makers, and create a space where hobbyists and science enthusiasts alike can work together.

We incorporate traditional makerspace technology - 3d printers, circuit bending stations, textiles, wood working equipment, and  power tools, along with biology and chemistry equipment. The aim is to provide the opportunity for everyone to participate at any level they are comfortable, whether that is through hands on classes, use of a coworking space, or more personal projects. Innovation and creativity are the result of truly interdisciplinary spaces where people can experiment and explore.

Jacksonville is experiencing brain drain to cities like Miami and Orlando. However, passionate members of the community are committed to the revitalization of the city, and this creates unique opportunities to reshape, restructure, and develop. Not only do we want to be counted among them, but we want to help others join that movement.

In addition to the work at Scihouse, we’re also currently working in tandem with the Jax Makerspace at the Jacksonville Public Library creating educational programs, developing classes in biology, electronics, and more.

The current space consists of three open units dedicated to electronics, woodworking, and biology/chemistry, allowing participants to explore in any direction they choose.

Some of the projects being worked on now are:

· Using bacteria to grow a leather-like material that is strong and eco friendly
· Using homemade radio equipment to pull images off of satellites in orbit
· Creating water filters out of food waste to remove heavy metals
· Turning waste shrimp shells into bioplastic
· Vertical gardening
· Pallet furniture
· Home brewing
· RetroPi and other RaspberryPi projects
· Internet of Things (IoT)
· Litchenberg wood burning
· Making carbon nanotubes, graphene, and other
nanomaterials
· Terrariums
· and we need you to do more!

Openness is a core value for our space, and the donations will be logged in a publicly accessible document where anyone can see exactly where and how every cent raised is used to support the space.

We are committed to the betterment of the community, but it is only through community support that we all succeed. Through supporting, you will help us maintain a space to house tools, host more workshops, and help develop Jacksonville as a maker hub for the region.
