Scooting4Donors

As a 4-time kidney transplant recipient, I know the need for organ donors. Four donors saved my life! Scooting 4Donors is a cross-country awareness campaign to register as many people as I can to the national organ donor registry. I will be driving a mobility scooter for this trip! In addition to kidney disease, I was born with bilateral hip dysplasia. Both of my hips are dislocated. I have gotten around relatively ok for the past 42 years, but age has worn my hips down and I now need to use a mobility scooter for long distances. I would say cross-country is a pretty long distance!

I did a practice run for 50 days and followed my transplant journey through the two states (plus bonus state) I have lived in for the majority of my life and received all four of my transplants. I began in Miami, Florida at Jackson Memorial Hospital where my mother gave me her kidney on August 26, 1987. I traveled north through Florida to Atlanta, Georgia where I received my final three kidneys. First was Children's Healthcare of Atlanta where my father gave me his kidney on October 6, 1994. Then I went across the street where my brother Kevin gave me his kidney on October 7, 1999 at Emory Hospital.  Finally, I visited Piedmont Healthcare where I received my last kidney on February 24, 2016 from my hero, angel donor who selflessly donated after passing away. I then continued to Tennessee to scoot through mountains and end in Nashville.

Starting in January 2021, I will be traveling the country for the entire trip. I will start in Hilton Head, South Carolina and then scoot through Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. I will take an few day stop in Dallas, Texas where I was born on June 30, 1976 and where doctors told my parents I wouldn't live more than two years. From Dallas I will go through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Nevada in the heart of the southwest. Finally ending up in California to Los Angeles and the Pacific in Malibu. That's a total of 12 states!

Along the way, I will have transplant center visits and special awareness events. The entire purpose of this is to raise the organ donor registry in each state I visit and the national registry to help the 114,000+ patients waiting for a life saving organ.
