REaCH: Refugees and Chilliwack
Donation protected
REaCH (Refugees and Chilliwack) is an organization of citizens passionate about creating positive change by sponsoring a Syrian family to join our community.
Spearheaded by Amber Price (nee Short) of The Book Man, Daris LaPointe (wife of Barry Penner and founder of Garrison's Little Free Library) Julia Dodge (instructor at UFV) and Eleasha Sabourin (Crown Counsel), this initiave is a grass roots, community driven effort in Chilliwack British Columbia.
We are applying as a 'Group of 5' which requires 5 Canadian citizens aged 18 or over to support all financial, practical and emotional support as the family integrates into our community.
We are banking as an organization with Envision Financial's Garrison Branch. We will be doing two fundraising dinners at Bravo! and Society Gathering House in the upcoming weeks to amass funds.
Extensive research was done at lifelinesyria, and organization in Toronto dedicated to sponsoring families and walking others through this process. Rea more about financial obligations here.
A $30K goal was set, as this is the minimum dollar amount required to support a family's living expenses for one calendar year. $7500 is required for start-up costs within that $30K. Start-up costs are a one-time payment and might include:
-household items
-furniture
-linens
-food staples
-(winter) clothing
-deposit for utilities
-phone installation
-first month’s rent
-school supplies for children
A sponsorship group takes full responsibility for a refugee family for one year from the date of arrival. Responsibilities include providing housing, clothing,
food, and all aspects of assisting with integration, e.g., enrolling adults in language classes and the children in schools, teaching them how to do the shopping, helping
them to find a family doctor, and so on. Although the cost of living varies from one region to another, the basic minimum cost required by the government to sponsor a refugee family for 12 months is $30K.
Paperwork is being completed to complete the application process.
We will be working closely with other community groups to successfully integrate the family into our community such as Chilliwack Community Services and The Chilliwack Learning Society,
Join us in creating real change NOW. This humanitarian crisis has touched all of us through our newsfeeds on Facebook, in the news, and we have struggled to find a way to help.
Open your hearts and your piggy banks, and get ready to be a part of the light in this dark time in history. Together we can, and will create REAL change. Far beyond the likes and comments on Facebook, we have the capacity to band together and forever alter a family's life. Thank you for being here, thank you for joining us, and we are excited to see what unfolds over the next few weeks. The time is NOW, and here we all are, ready to do the right thing.
