About the San Diego SeaLions
Established in 1988, the San Diego SeaLions were formed so that women would have a place to continue to play high- level soccer after high school and college. In 1999 the club won the USASA National Women’s Open Cup, and in 2000 the club was invited to become one of 6 founding members of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), a league that now has over 70 teams throughout the USA. The SeaLions won WPSL Championships in 2000 and 2013. No other adult soccer club boasts such a long tradition of excellence, success, and passion.
In 2004 the SeaLions incorporated as San Diego WFC, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, in order to grow the opportunities on which the club was founded – develop a full service soccer program to provide playing, training and coaching opportunities, as well as soccer business administration experience, for females of all ages.
To that end the SeaLions not only play competitive soccer, but share those opportunities with local schools, social service organizations, and charities. SDWFC hosts youth soccer clinics from South Bay to San Marcos and everywhere in between; participates with local Boys & Girls Clubs; raises money for youth and charitable groups at games, tournaments, jogathons and other events; and provides internship opportunities in all levels of club operations.
The SeaLions' roster consists of current and former college and university athletes, former professionals, and local San Diego prospects.
These players have excelled in quality college academic programs, achieving excellence both on and off the soccer field. To excel at both requires a special kind of talent, which we seek out and recruit. The SeaLions are primed to become San Diego’s professional women’s soccer club, and are working to join the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) as its first California team, while maintaining its founding community-service ideals.
We’ve assembled a top-notch professional staff of coaches and administrative, community-outreach, training and medical personnel. In short, we run the club like a professional organization should be run.
