Hi! For those of you who don't know us, we're Tehlor Kay Mejia and Candice Montgomery, two young adult authors and activists who were invited to speak at Seattle's upcoming GeekGirlCon as panelists.

After committing to the panels - as well as getting very excited about the opportunity to speak in person, and network with other people in our field - life took an unpredictible turn, leaving Tehlor a newly single mother with her income cut in half, grieving the unexpected end of her marriage and struggling to make ends meet. At the same time, another twist left Candice in a toxic living situation on the brink of homelessness.

We are doing our best in the day-to-day to survive these setbacks, but unforunately they left us both with very little in the extra-funds department. Hence, our dillema.

We'd both dearly love to keep our commitments to the moderators of our panels, and to the conference itself. On top of that, we are both vocal women of color in an industry where that is often a liability. The opportunity to speak to members of our community about our experiences isn't one that comes around often, and passing up those opportunities after beginning your career at a disadvantage can be yet another obstacle in a path forward that is already littered with them.

To that end, we're asking our community for help. The set amount will pay for lodging (which we'll share), Tehlor's plane ticket from Southern Oregon, and food and incidentals for the three day trip, which will make it possible for us to keep our commitments and make the most of the opportunities we were given.

We sincerely hope you'll consider donating (if you have the means) and sharing if you don't. We just want the chance to share what we know, and what we've experienced, and to get a little nudge in the right direction career-wise. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to our story.
