Sergio's Healing Journey

Donation protected
Some of you know our story and have followed us through this journey so I’ll save you most of the details. In 2012 we adopted our 4 precious boys. They were 6, 3, 12 months, and 3 months. They came from horrible conditions, including neglect, drugs, alcohol, physical and mental abuse.

When we got Sergio, we quickly learned of the neglect and abuse he suffered and the effects it had on his development. We have spent years in and out of different therapies, inpatient hospitals, and on and off medications. We have taken classes, read books, watched videos, and sought help. So far nothing has worked. On April the 1st, Sergio was put in inpatient care because of a serious incident. While there, he was diagnosed with RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder) and FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) https://www.ranchforkids.org/resources-1.

Due to his extreme behaviors, we have sought out a treatment called Ranch for Kids https://www.ranchforkids.org . At the Ranch for Kids, children live in a family setting with house parents and other children overcoming FASD and RAD. The Ranch for Kids program participants live, complete chores, participate in equine therapy, and attend school, this allows children to learn effective communication, responsibility, and appropriate behavior in a peer group facing the same challenges.

Sadly, to get the intensive treatment needed we will need to pay cash up front and monthly payments for the duration of his stay. We have looked for resources through the state, but because Sergio is not in DHS custody, we have no help or resources. I called almost all facilities in Oklahoma and none of them could take Sergio because of the intensity of his diagnosis. So, we had to look outside of our state and found Ranch for Kids in Montana. Please consider helping us get the money needed to help our boy. He didn’t ask for what he was handed, and we just want to help him heal and have a future. We have faith that God WILL provide what we need and that he will heal our boy. Love you all!

Attachment is defined as the affectional tie between two people. It begins with the bond between the infant and mother. This bond becomes internally representative of how the child will form relationships with the world. “There is an inability to love or feel guilty. There is no conscience. Their inability to enter into any relationship makes treatment or even education impossible.

RAD is a complex psychiatric illness that can affect young children. It is characterized by serious problems in emotional attachments to others. RAD usually presents by age 5 and then can manifest its self by the time the child reaches puberty.

Some of the RAD symptoms include: Superficially engaging & charming, lying about the obvious, stealing, no impulse control, lack of cause-and-effect thinking, lack of conscience. Any of the following conditions occurring to a child during the first 36 months of life puts them at risk: Pre-birth exposure to trauma, drugs or alcohol, abuse (physical, emotional and sexual), neglect (not answering the baby’s cry for help).
