PANDAS-Service Dog for a PANDAS Child
We are not very good at asking for money or donations but we are trying to raise money for our son to have a service dog. On the outside, our son looks healthy and happy, but on the inside our son is fighting a battle that most people can't even begin to imagine.
Our son has been diagnosed with a disease called PANDAS. It stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. Basically, strep antibodies are attacking our son's brain. It sounds awful, because it is awful. The effects of this disease on a child is unfathomable, stressful, exhausting, debilitating, heartbreaking and emotional. Our lives have been turned upside down and we just need help.
The service dog will provide our family with help and hope. This dog will be trained to perform tasks for our son such as apply deep pressure stimulus or to go get help. The dog will also help our son with just simple every day tasks that the disease has just wiped away the ability to do on his own.
We know not many people know about PANDAS like they do such as other common disorders. PANDAS is very difficult to manage, treat, and afford. There are not many specialist. Most Specialist do not accept insurances. Those that do accept insurances, will quickly find insurances denying coverage and not pay for treatments most of the times. There is also not a clear treatment plan. Every kid is different and finding the right combination to help a child is time consuming and difficult. And there are a lot of doctor's appointments involved. Lots of blood work. Lots of traveling.
So we are overwhelmed. We know this service dog will help our son and help take the burden off our family. Please help in any way you can. We are very grateful for our friends, family, community and strangers to help bring a service dog home to our son! Thank you!
