Miami's non-for-profit radio station needs funding to help the community !
The station has three goals:
1) Be the voice of any and all Miami Non-profits. We give free commercials to all Miami non-profits for events and awareness. We are the voice of Miami community non-profits.
2) Promote local musicians, artists cometiens and more. Mimai has homegrown talent the big commercial stations won' t play
3) Bring a diverse mix of ecletic music back to Miami
Shake 108 (WMIV-LP, 107.9 FM) is a low-power radio station that has been operating in Little Haiti. It’s where a diverse mix of music exists, including Outkast, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, the Ramones, White Stripes, Devo, industrial, alternative, punk, ska, EDM, bluegrass, funk, and reggae reigns supreme.
How did Miami radio get so commercialized in the first place?
Author and veteran disc jockey Jeff Lemlich, whose 1991 bookSavage Lost: Florida’s Garage Bands exhaustively chronicles the South Florida music scene of the 1960s, says he knows where he believes it all went wrong for radio. “What it boils down to is, radio general managers used to come from programming, not sales, and that all changed later,” he tells theBT. “So the guys with great ears, who took chances, whounderstood, who supported local bands had to clear the path for guys who only understood ratings, sales, and -- ugh -- focus groups. Back in the day, it didn’t matter if a station made X amount of money -- just as long as they were making money. So they could take chances.”
Lemlich continues: “Now, the same mega-companies program the same songs over and over, all across the country, leaving behind regional bands or any kind of originality. Radio used to both entertain and educate. WQAM, WFUN, WEDR, WMBM, WWOK, and many others all had personality. They weren’t cookie-cutter stations. They were fun to work at, and fun to listen to. That’s what’s missing today.”
And that’s what the Stebbins wants to re-establish here -- fun and community awareness.
