15% Serious. 80% Humorous. 5% Cancerous.
That's how Shannon Wiedman describes herself in her blog, detailing her journey being diagnosed with, living with, and crushing cancer.
"I want to make sure the cancer comes out of the serious bucket."
That's what Shannon told me as she was doing the math for her first blog post headline. If you've ever had the pleasure of knowing Shannon or hearing her crazy infectious laugh from across a room, you know her natural self is fun-loving, adventurous, hilarious and full of heart. You should also know, there's no way in heck that will ever change.
On Friday, April 5th, Shannon started her first round of chemotherapy to treat Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) that formed from a Molar Pregnancy. In words that don't sound like they came directly from a scientific article, Shannon has a tumor in her uterus and she's sending it an eviction notice.
The journey to this point has been a long one, but starting chemotherapy has been a turning point. Shannon is beyond ready to kick the sh*t out of this cancer. She's going in with a strength that isn't the least bit surprising, yet so awe-inspiring and impressive. Shannon may be nice, kind-hearted and the perfect comic relief... but even more so, she is wicked smart, incredibly strong-willed, and wholly compassionate.
While Shannon could knock this cancer down on its ass all on her own, it's up to us to let her know she's not in this alone. As friends, family, acquaintances, neighbors or even strangers, it's up to us to show her our support and let her know how much we are truly there for her in anything she or Adam – her other half, clad in plaid – would ever need.
That's brings us here, to this GoFundMe. Crushing cancer is expensive. It's not just medical expenses, but everything that goes along with putting your entire soul into fighting.
Both Shannon and Adam would appreciate anything you have to give to support them in this fight. Whether it be a small gift to get them a cup of coffee – so they don't need to drink terrible hospital coffee during one of Shannon's many overnight stays, or a larger gift to help Shannon afford the chance at a great wig to make her feel more like herself as she goes through some of the side effects of chemo.
If monetary gifts aren't your thing, please send some love and words of encouragement to Shannon to let her know you're in this journey with her.
