Mimi's haircuts in Philippines

Think of the last time you got a GREAT haircut, how did that make you feel? Or, think about the last time you were feeling some way, but counted on a haircut to make you feel better.
Now imagine you've never had a GREAT haircut, not once in your life. How does that feel?
On February 18th I am traveling to an orphanage in Bustos, Philippines to provide hair services for 160 children ages 5-15.
As a master stylist and owner of Shear Love Salon in Atlanta, Georgia, I am excited and blessed to offer haircuts to the children of St. Martin’s Children’s Village.
The Bahay at Yaman ni San Martin de Porres (St. Martin Children’s Village) provides life changing programs for children from the day they enter. The Children’s Village programs include mental and physical health and wellness, living and social skills training, nutrition, formal and vocational education and development of personal values and spiritual awareness. The goal is to provide a spectrum of services to ensure a positive future for each child. The children arrive at St. Martin’s after living on the streets, “a reality that is worsened by man’s indifference to man” (excerpt from St Martin’s web site - click here to ready the full story). They have lived in circumstances unimaginable, but at St. Martin they are given the opportunity to just be kids.
My fourteen years in hairdressing have taught me that hair is much more than stuff growing out of our heads. Hair is a source of CONFIDENCE, creativity and EXPRESSION of SELF all of which heavily influence self-confidence. I know that we can all relate to this.. Its amazing the amount of trust that is put in our hands as stylists. The hair is what surrounds our face. This is our IDENTITY.
For those of you that know me, you will know the amount of love that I have for Children. For years, I’ve dreamed of helping children without access to the grooming and styling that I am fortunate enough to provide each day to my clients. Recently, a client answered my dream and connected me to the St. Martin Children's Village. I now understand the gift of my hands and the purpose of what I am to do... and now is my opportunity to give these children something immeasurable: the self-esteem that comes from self-expression and knowing they look good! Most importantly the opportunity that I can help give the children, a sense of SELF .... I have clients that are 3 years old who tell me what they want for their hair....this tells me that even at that age, a sense of self is already identified. If you’ve ever put your head in my hands, you know there will be some fly lookin’ kiddos playing in Bustos!
In addition to a great haircut, I will treat and teach the kids how to treat their hair for lice, provide grooming tools and teach them self care (shampooing, conditioning, combing the hair...) , adding to their long term quality-of-life. If you feel the calling to donate to this cause, with supplies, such as combs, brushes, or money, it will be greatly appreciated! And most definitely used to help make this the best experience for the 160 kids!
Thank you so much to those who have already donated, as well as those who have donated items. Please keep me in your prayers to have a safe and successful journey.
I leave February 18, 2017 and will be cutting hair at the orphanage February 20-25. Join me in supporting the kids of St. Martin Children’s Village as I put that “post-cut smile, you know that smile you get after a cut, on 160 young faces!
Stay TUNED, I can't wait to share the journey!
