Shelly's Road To Recovery

For those of us who know my mom Rochelle, we know that she is an active, caring, energetic, involved, dog-loving, people-devoted, sweet and kind woman. For those of you who don’t, you’re missing a real light in your life.

On Wednesday, April 24th, Rochelle spent her evening walking her daughter’s black 8-month old yorkie- mix named Ace. When they were walking along Browadway in Taunton, they weren’t aware of what lay ahead. Rochelle recalls the moment her and Ace were sighted by the pitbull, making its way out of the house.

She is a lover of all species and pitbulls are amongst her favorite breed. Rochelle knows that the energy you share with another being is reflected within them and she cherishes the light she shares with others. Over the years, she has trained a few breeds, including pitbulls, as family dogs. These have been some of the sweetest, personable, well-behaved dogs I have met. Because of her experience, she knew when her day had taken a turn and her reaction of protection for Ace is one she offers every single individual she loves.

Rochelle picked Ace up and ran with him the moment they were sighted by the pitbulls coming out of the house. Unfortunately, she could not move faster than the pitbulls. After being pounced on, she curled herself around Ace in a fetal position, knowing he was the main target. Because of her initial reaction to protect Ace, she didn’t see when the five other pitbulls ran out of the house and in their direction. Curled on the ground with Ace caressed in her arms, Rochelle endured an attack by six pitbulls. At one point, she tried to get up and run with little Ace. Her movements only allowed the attacking pitbulls to gain more access to her legs, arms, and face. Gashes where teeth punctured her skin are littered all over her body, some will take a very long time to heal. By the grace of God — or whomever you may call your creator — Rochelle has survived with non life-threatening injuries.

Unfortunately, Rochelle must now live with the wounds of her attack. Some will remain open for weeks, preventing her from living life normally — including work. Most frustrating for her, she loves her career. She loves working with people, seeing the best in them and trying to help them see the value in themselves. She is a foster mother and recently promoted, Rochelle has become the manager at an organization focused on housing assistance, a field she has worked in for years. Having to be out of work for an extended period of time, and like every other American — still having to pay bills, Rochelle will have more expenses than income. Rochelle and her family would greatly appreciate any donations to help pay hospital bills, rent, etc so that she can focus on healing.
