After several health complications, Joshua Powell passed away in the early hours of Saturday, January 30, at the age of 70. He was born on February 11, 1945 in Boston and raised by Mattie Powell and the late Joshua Powell Sr. His brother Tyrone Mark Powell survives him and his sister, Madelyne "Kandi" Powell predeceased him.
He had 3 marriages and raised 3 sons and 4 daughters. His daughter Michelle Powell predeceased him, as did his father Joshua Powell Sr.
He was a member of the Christian Science Church throughout his life. He was very committed to his religion, to his relationship with God, and his devotion to his own spiritual growth through prayer and ongoing studies.
He was the long time director of the All Dorchester Sports League, an organization which serves the youth in the city of Boston through baseball and other sports. After ADSL, he coached at Roxbury Community College and Suffolk University, among others. He also dedicated his time to umpiring for local amateur and youth sports.
His commitment to youth extended well beyond the baseball field. He was a mentor, coach and community role model who impacted the lives of countless numbers of people locally, nationally and internationally.
Survivors include his daughter Lesa, his son Joshua, his daughter Keisha, his son Armando, his daughter Kira, his son Jarrod, his sons and daughters-in-law and his many extended children. He is fondly remembered by 8 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and many close friends that over the years have become part of his extended family circle.
Joshua's funeral is scheduled to be Friday, February 5, 2016.
