Sia Van Wyck's Compassion Fund
Donation protected
On July 18th, 2017, a seven-year-old girl was struck by a tractor and died in a heart-rending accident on a Nova Scotia farm. Though she was visiting Canadian relations in the area at the time, she resided in Kennebunk, Maine with her parents and her beloved five-year-old brother. She had just finished the second grade, and leaves behind many friends and doting relatives.
The people in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia who have been affected by this heart breaking event have rallied with local fund-raising events. However, family, friends and others who do not live in the region are wanting to contribute to the grieving parents.
This online fundraising campaign has been set up to meet the requests we have received.
This is a Compassion Fund for the family to use as they see fit. The family is under a great deal of strain and the fund is to help alleviate any financial worries at this challenging time. Loss of income, the need for certain professional services and travel expenses to date are among the challenges and worries they face.
We have not been able to determine yet if the family’s insurance will cover out-of-country medical expenses. These expenses, once known, may be extremely high. Further fund raising targeted specifically for medical costs may be necessary in the future.
The grief that accompanies such an unexpected loss is overwhelming. By contributing to this fund you are assisting Sia’s family in this time of sorrow.
**Olivia Polk, the campaign organizer, is a cousin of Sia's father, and Douglas Reach, the beneficiary, is Sia's grandfather. The reason the funds are being transferred to Douglas, rather than Sia's parents, is because of how GoFundMe operates: both the organizer and the beneficiary need to reside in the same country. Since Sia's parents live in the United States, this is the solution we landed upon. Douglas is setting up a separate account for all the funds raised through this effort, and will transfer them to Sia's parents as donations continue to come in.**
