RE: FIRST Global Robotic Challenge SMART Sistas Robot Team Sponsorship

As per the Vanuatu National ICT, the Cybersecurity and importantly the Universal Access Policies implementations, we learnt that by end of this year 2017, Vanuatu’s population Coverage of voice, narrowband and broadband internet coverage will be around 98%.  This is a huge target that will not only contribute to other sector development but raising Vanuatu to another bar higher.

However, with all these positive developments and achievements, they all come with challenges being faced through the processes involved and even more to come.  In the world of Technology and particularly for Vanuatu, one of the main challenges that the country as a whole is facing is limited human resources in different areas and levels expected.  And this can be proved in many of the reports including those of TRR’s reports published in its website.

The SMART Sistas Committee has recognized these challenges and wishes to contribute to address such, catering for future development hence, initiated a project “SMART Sistas”.  From a number of events and trainings that SMART Sistas Committee conducted, it was proven to us that, Vanuatu lacks a lot of human capacity in all levels as alluded above including being creative and innovative.

Considering the above, the SMART Sistas Committee had a Vision; “to contribute to creation of ICT innovators in Vanuatu” hence, establishing a SMART Sistas program. The SMART Sistas program also caters for gender equality and we are pleased to report that it is becoming very successful.

One of the successful outcome that you will be pleased to hear is that  three of the girls from the 2016 Camp and a mentor will represent Vanuatu to participate in the inaugural FIRST Global robotic challenge that will take place at the Constitutional Hall in Washington, D.C., from 16 to18 July 2017, competing with over 160 countries.  http://first.global/.   This again is a huge step forward for Vanuatu and again raising Vanuatu’s bar.

This year’s robotics challenge theme: “Provide Access to Clean Water”, will reflect how we need to cooperate as a global society to solve the water crisis. Teams representing over one hundred different countries will be organized into two competing alliances, each alliance composed of three national teams that rearrange into different alliances for each match. These alliances are tasked with accomplishing engineering tasks such as the storing of drinkable water, filtering of contaminated water, and procuring of new sources water.

Solving this global water issue will need much more than the best engineering minds of our era. It will require a whole new generation of tech savvy future STEM leaders who will demand a global response to the issue of water security. These students are doing much more than competing in a robotics game – they are learning that these challenges will only be overcome when people realize that we are all on the same team, and that with technology, we can accomplish things we can only imagine by communicating, cooperating, and working together to apply technology as a tool for positive change in the world.

Hence, the purpose of this letter as you will now start to pick up is to request for your assistance to cater for one of the challenges that we are currently facing.  We are seeking sponsorship/donations for the Sistas Mastering Advanced Robotic Technology (SMART) Sistas Vanuatu Team that is taking part in this year’s FIRST Global Robotic Challenge in the USA as outlined above.

The first Robot was assembled and programmed within just a week and is being kept in a working venue sponsored by VSolutions in Port Vila. We have just less than a month to raise VT1, 500,000 to enable our 3 girls and a mentor to participate in this competition. This is the first time Vanuatu is being represented in such event so all sponsors will be acknowledged.

The SMART Sistas Committee and the FIRST Global greatly appreciates the support that team sponsors have provided to help students from around the world attend the 2017 FIRST Global Challenge.
