Are you someone who enjoys picking berries? Do you want to be able to pick a large variety right here in Saskatoon along the Meewasin River Valley trail? Look no further!
We are 7 students at the University of Saskatchewan who picture a beautiful orchard that provides a place for community to enjoy and experience nature throughout the summer. Our current project design will plant varieties of fruit trees and shrubs including: Haskaps, Dwarf Apple, Dwarf Sourcherry, Gooseberry, Pincherry, Chokecherry, and Saskatoon berry.
The location is on the east side of the river north of the CPR bridge. Not only will this orchard provide fruit, but also block wind from the surrounding area and encourage more biking and walking to school. In addition, it will provide valuable ecosystem services and functions for the area which will attract birds and pollinators.
We have received a generous donation of $1000.00 from EcoFriendly Sask that will be used to purchase our plant varieties. We will require approximately $10, 000.00 in total to purchase the 200+ plants that will survive the conditions at the site and be able to provide fruit within a few years.
We envision having educational signs here where people unfamiliar with the species could learn how to identify them and what the berries could be used for i.e. jam and when they are best to pick.
I am the head of funding for our project and I will be ensuring that all donations are used to purchase plant varieties for the orchard.
Thank you for your support!
