My name is Fawad Barak and I am a student currently attending George Mason University. GMU UMR will be hosting a basketball tournament Sunday, April 30th to raise money for the humanitarian relief efforts in Somalia and South Sudan. My basketball team is currently signed up and ready to go, we wanted to make it our goal to raise $1,000 for our brothers and sisters who are experiencing the horrible effects of the famine. We will conclude the campaign on April 29th and all the proceeds will go directly to the United Muslim Relief GMU chapter. Please spread this information to your friends and family. Below there is more information regarding to the current emergency relief program that United Muslim Relief has laid out on their website. Somalia:
6.2 million people, are facing acute food insecurity and in need of humanitarian assistance.
185,000 children are expected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year, this figure is expected to rise to 270,000 in the next few months.
South Sudan:
270,000 children are severely malnourished.
The total number of food insecure people across the country is expected to rise from 4.9 million to 5.5 million in the next few months
United Muslim Relief is launching an emergency relief force to get immediate help to the people of Somalia and South Sudan. Five million people are already in need of humanitarian assistance.
Somalis and South Sudanese families are in need of food, clean water, and shelter. Four out of 10 people are in struggling to survive.
The sparse rainfall and fighting between militants are the main causes for the deprivation of the crop harvests and livestock herds, putting millions of lives at risk. UMR plans to provide life-saving assistance to families by sending family assistance packages. Each care pack includes clean drinking water, food, and hygiene kits. UMR aims to reduce malnutrition, protect the thousands of displaced families and restore their dignity.

UMR is responding to the famine in Somalia and South Sudan from a holistic approach. During a famine, one of the most impacted segments of society are children. According to UNICEF, almost 1.4 million children are at risk of death from severe acute malnutrition this year, as famine continues in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen.
