Over the years, I’ve shared my story --one that mirrors millions of other undocumented immigrants’ own narratives. For years, I have gone from isolated student, to an outspoken advocate for immigrant rights, even having been arrested for civil rights , for the freedom to live without fear of my family being separated. And while I now can breathe a sigh of relief because of my DACA status, my mother continues to be caught in the web of a severely broken immigration system.
I’m wrapping up my time on the Hillary Clinton campaign as a Digital Organizer in a battleground state, North Carolina. I was thrown off balance last week when I received a phone call that no child is ever prepared to hear. Through the phone and across the miles the message was heard loud and clear. My mother is sick. The threat of our family being separated is as real as it was 10 years ago when my father was deported.
I’ve shared about my mother, the warrior . But sometimes warriors end up wounded and need help. My mom has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism-thyroid storm . When we first learned of the diagnosis, we feared that we’d be ripped apart as she seeks medical help in Mexico. Since my mother doesn’t have protected legal status, if she were to leave the country, she would be barred from entering.
Thankfully, we found a medical center in Florida that is willing to give her the medical care she desperately needs. This is the best news we could hear since this means that, for now, my family will remain together. There’s one large caveat, however.
The medical bills are prohibitively expensive. This is where YOU come in. I know and trust that my community will have our back. I’m fundraising $15,000 that will go towards the medical procedure and aftercare.
We don’t know what the future holds, but what we do know is that with each contribution, we’ll get closer to reaching our goal to have enough money for my mother’s medical care. And I am grateful you’ll consider helping my family as we face this very challenging time in our lives.
