Black Flower Society's Mission: Changing our community through action and education.
Black Flower Society has partnered with the Langston Hughes Academy (LHA) located in North Tulsa, Oklahoma, to start the Sojourner Community Farm project.
LHA is located in a food desert where there isn't a supermarket within 6 miles. This means we have restricted access to fresh fruits or vegetables, let alone organic produce. Our community has the highest mortality from cancer, and the highest occurrence of hypertension and diabetes. This is directly related to the unhealthy food that is readily available in fast food restaurants and convenience stores in our neighborhoods.
Black Flower Society is taking the initiative to teach ourselves how to start an Organic farm from scratch, and be an example to other communities across the country. We are going to be the change we want to see in our community- going from consumers to producers and to be a positive influence to others.
Sojourner Community Farms will be a place for all of us to be a part of something bigger - be able to plant & grow our own food, encourage others within our community to follow our example, and eventually become self-sufficient and sustainable along with monetary benefits. This project will require for us to learn to use carpentry, construction and farming tools SAFELY, build grow shelves for our nurseries, learn horticulture and agriculture, and learn about, and build our own water catchment system. We will also learn how to package and market our produce, budget and balance the books, and create and nurture relationships with vendors, which are all integral parts of being an entrepreneur. We will be continually exposed to learning, which will help improve not only our test scores, but hopefully also the scores of other students who emulate us.
We would like to thank you all in advance for all your support in making Sojourner Community Farms go from dream to reality. Kindly walk with us on this exciting journey.
