Hey everybody! Hope ya'll are having a blessed day! Thank you first and foremost for taking the time to read over my story...it truly means a lot! I have a mission to share with you all through soul food in the Bay Area and hope to feed you soon!
A little about me....I have been cooking since I was 4 years old....yup, FOUR. Little ole' me on a step stool flipping pancakes and frying bacon was a early memory. I would be right up underneath my mother trying to soak up recipes and all the knowledge of frying chicken that one can consume!! Now growing up wasn't the easiest, but we had love and food and held one another up. My mother is the sweetest person I have ever met and most selfless. If she can find a way to help, she will bend over backwards at any point in time. When I was 5, she took full custody of all 3 of my neices and nephews without hesitation when issues arised. She always steps up to the plate to help and has instilled that in me as well.
My mother also loved to cook for my father and they loved like you have never seen. My father had Alzheimer's while I was in high school and at the age of 16 we lost him to the horrific disease. It was 2 days after Thanksgiving and my mother kind of lost her will to cook after that....but her and I stood together and continued on. Then my sister and nephew passed tragically in a house fire...couldn't get worse right? My best friend Allison Burroughs came into my classroom almost a year to the date of my fathers passing and told me my mother was in the hospital and it was NOT looking good. When I arrived she has passed out at home and was suffering from Congestive Heart Failure. My guidance couneslor at the time (Ms. Childress, God rest her soul) rushed me to the hospital and I stayed by her side until she recovered and was out of ICU. She is doing great at the vibrant age of 75 and is the youngest woman I know! She is too spunky for her own good!!
Basically, I have come to realize at the young age of 29 that life is not to be take for granted. It is not guaranteed at any point......say your blessings and have faith. Call your parents and tell them how awesome they are. Take one plate of leftovers and bring it to one homeless person on your way to commute in the morning. It will change your life....I promise you, no matter how cynical you may be! ;) I love to cook and bake for my friends but realized that my true passion would be a Soul Food Truck and a brick and mortar down the road. I will soon be finishing my business course at Renaissaince Entrepreunership Center for a 9 week program and after I finish the course, I am jumping into the game and purchashing my food truck!!!!
Along with the business is going to be a non-profit program to assist the homeless through rehibilitating them back into society by employing them to clean up the city. I plan to take dipilitated buildings, revamp them and create a work exchange program so they will have a place to call home. With the help of my B.A. in Psychology, I plan to use all forms of therapy (i.e. art, music, group meditation...whatever it takes!) to assist those we have seem to have forgotten get back on their feet. I would also like to reach out to the at risk youth and recently released inmates looking for a chance at work.
Here is my plea..... PLEASE help me gain enough funds to start my dream. I want to bring Lowcountry Food out to California and show everyone what real Mac and Cheese, Buttermilk Cast Iron Fried Chicken and She-Crab Soup is about....and when I am done, there will be no stopping me!!! Thank you for all of your support and for taking the time to read my story......God Bless!! <3
