Sound of Jura Beach Clean, Raleigh International
Donation protected
This is to raise money for Raleigh International
Thank you for your interest – maybe you share my concern about environmental degradation and would like to support me cleaning up a remote and beautiful coastline in Argyll, Scotland.
What will I be doing?
From 10th June – 3rd July 2019, I will work my way along the western coastline of the Keills peninsula – the mainland opposite the Island of Jura - collecting marine plastics and other debris. To my knowledge, this has never been done before because the shoreline is inaccessible and can only be reached on foot or by boat. The Sound of Jura is ecologically biodiverse and is a designated Marine Protected Area by the Scottish Government.
How can you help?
I welcome your support and there are different ways of getting involved. You can either help practically by joining me in the beach-cleaning exercise, and/or you can help-out financially by sponsoring me. You might like to sponsor me per sack of rubbish collected, or per length of coastline cleaned.
Why am I doing it?
I am fund-raising for Raleigh International, a sustainable development charity, so that I can support their work in Nepal. Working with the Gurkha community by providing water and sanitation infrastructure in villages which were damaged by earthquakes in 2015.
What’s the plan?
The money raised from restoring a wilderness coastline to its former pristine condition will be channelled directly to improve livelihoods of some of the poorest people on the planet. I consider it a worthwhile use of my first summer holiday from Glasgow University – and I hope you’ll agree.
I intend to cover 20 kilometres from Crinan Harbour to Keills Point, and I’ll be thinking about the Gurkha villages while I do it. Raleigh International has been working in Nepal, delivering practical projects to improve local livelihoods. For three weeks, I will be living and working alongside members of a local Gurkha community. Days will be spent working on a community-led project, contributing to the Global Goals.
What better way to get to know Nepal than by spending time at the heart of a community? I’ll be part of a team working alongside local project partners and community members to create lasting change. We’ll be cooking and sharing meals, so I expect plenty of rice and vegetables (dal bhat is the meal that features most regularly in Nepali food).
I’ll be working on a water and sanitation project to help improve access to drinking water, handwashing and toilet facilities as well as raising awareness of these issues, locally. This might involve helping construct toilets one day then be building handwashing stations the next. It might be hard work at times, but the effort will make a real difference.
Anything else?
While in Nepal, I’ll spend a fortnight walking in the Ruby Valley in Dhading with my team from Raleigh International. Led by local guides, this involves trekking up hills, through local villages, beautiful farm terraces and see stunning views of the central Himalayas. By day, we’ll explore the incredible scenery that Nepal is famed for; and each night we’ll set up camp out under the stars and cook outside together. Thank you for your interest – maybe you share my concern about environmental degradation and would like to support me cleaning up a remote and beautiful coastline in Argyll, Scotland.
