My name is Kira Geiger. I am an actor in NYC venturing for the very first time into the world of producing. And what better way to get my feet wet than with a play I believe necessary to the current social conversation?

WHAT IS IT?

Pygmalion goes awry in this dark comedy about money, sex and power, which hinges on an episode of sexual harassment. Theresa Rebeck's  first widely noticed play is a retelling of Shaw's classic story "with a contemporary, comic and sinister spin" - also involving misplaced amour and the possibility of a four sided love triangle. The combatants are a sexy, volatile young woman and three Back Bay types: a writer, a lawyer, and a fiancée in sensible shoes. The setting is Boston, the ending is happy, and laughter abounds.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

While certainly a comedy, with witty banter and zinging one-liners, the play also explores serious issues like sexual harassment, the control and use of women, self-determination, identity, and changing expectations of men in a feminist era. Its discussion of sexual harassment was particularly timely, coming as it did soon after the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas controversy, which you can read about here and here

Rebeck later wrote that when Spike Heels debuted in New York, “Frank Rich’s response...was to compare it to pillow talk and dismiss it as half-baked fluff; four months later, when Oleanna opened off-Broadway he wrote “finally, someone has written a play about sexual harassment” and commended it a searing commentary on our times. Apparently when a woman writes about an actual incident of sexual harassment, it’s pillow talk; and when a man writes about a woman lying about sexual harassment, it’s a searing commentary.”

WHEN DO WE NEED THE FUNDS?

We will be performing the play on December 8, 9, and 10, and so we need the funds by December 10.

WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO?

Rent
I have had my heart set on Loft227 from day one, and am incredibly grateful to have owner Robin Sokoloff already sponsoring a large amount of the cost of renting her space. New York City is expensive, and I am so grateful for Robin’s generosity in helping me afford the space that fits our needs so perfectly.

Rights
I need to pay our wonderful playwright per performance for the use of her words.

Stipends/Misc.
These three actors and director volunteered many hours to this project, and I would really like to be able to compensate their hard work. Other expenses include renting rehearsal spaces, printing programs, buying props/costumes we can't pull from our closets, etc.

LONG STORY SHORT....

Making theater in New York is incredibly expensive.
Please help us make our vision a reality by giving whatever you can - even $1 makes a difference.

If you aren't in New York or can't see the show, please consider supporting us through this GoFundMe page and/or sharing it with anyone who may be interested.

If you are able to make it to the show, you can support us by getting your tickets here.
