SSA NATIONAL Conference

Donation protected
The purpose of this event is to connect Somali youth organizations across the continent in an effort to establish a voice for the diaspora. Through collaborating with one another we will be able to further benefit our individual communities and eventually the greater Somali diaspora. Sadly, there is a disconnect between the Somali youth and we hope to connect them and motivate them to be active members in their communities. Through collaborating with one another we will be able to further benefit our individual communities and eventually the greater Somali diaspora.

The theme for this year's conference will be helping Somali college students become a helping hand for their community. Also translated in Somali as Dadkaada wax u tar.  This year there will be numerous SSAs present representing their respective schools from various states in the US and provinces in Canada. The SSAs represented are from San Diego, Seattle, Massachusetts, Toronto, Atlanta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and many more! The conference will be held on March 30st-April 2nd, 2018 at the University of Washington Seattle campus.

The conference is a 3 day long event and the first day and half of the second day will consist of numerous workshops which focus on establishing a voice for the diaspora. The workshops will be in the forms of discussions, panels and cultural workshops. The later half of the second day of the conference will be a “TedTalks” like event featuring speeches from international Somali leaders, humanitarians, and influencers. This event is open to the public, and will likely draw a very large audience, since all of the speakers are world renowned. The theme of these talk will be finding power in identity, holding tight to your roots, and empowering the Somali The third day of the event will be a large culture show including guest speakers, poets, dancers, fashion, singers and different musicians. Although there will be some performers from out of town, the majority of the talent will be local artists. The cultural showcase will highlight the richness of Somali cultural practices: live music, modern poetry and ancient proverbs, traditional dances, and much more.

This conference has been one we have planning for a while and one that the Somali community truly needs. Unfortunately, in order to host this conference, we require financial assistance from the community. As a student organization, we do not receive much funding from the university and while we have been fundraising on our own, the funds required to make this a successful event are far greater than the amount we currently have been able to raise. We truly hope that our community is able to support us and the youth and help us host this conference.

This is a very important time for the Somali community to come together and invest in the youth who are the keepers of our future. In order for our community to prosper we must be sure that our youth are engaged and invested in their communities and that is just what this conference seeks to do. We hope to continue this conference in future years, with it being held at a new campus each year and hopefully expanding to include SSAs across the globe. However, in order to do so we need your support!

Thank you in advance for your support. Aad baad u mahadsantihiin walaalayaal!
