Stephanie's Medical Mission Trip
Hey everyone! My name is Stephanie George and I am an upcoming Junior Pre-med/Pre-PA student at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I was recently given the opportunity to travel to La Romana, Dominican Republic for a Medical Mission Trip in August. However, in order to do this, I have to find a way to fund the trip on my own!
Let me share what this experience means for me.
"What's a Physician Assistant?” You might be wondering, as I’ve received this question endless times since I declared my major in 2014. And, well, it wasn't until I began shadowing one here in Chattanooga that I realized exactly what a Physician Assistant does. Simply put, it’s everything I want in a career and more. Though I’ve had limited shadowing experience so far, I've already learned so much about the medical field and the life of a Physician Assistant, which so far has included treating patients in Neurology, examining MRI's of the Central Nervous System and filling my notebook with notes.
To coin a technical definition, a PA is someone who diagnoses and treats illnesses, orders and interprets tests for patients, develops treatment plans for patients, assists in surgery, writes prescriptions and makes rounds in the hospital. They work directly under doctors and help patients on a personal level.
I created this FundMe page not because I love holding out my hand and asking strangers for donations, but because this is an experience I truly believe will positively influence my medical and cultural perspective. The funds you donate will help me study different hospital departments and provide me with a well-rounded perspective on global health and faith. During this program, I will be learning alongside doctors and PA's,shadowing their everyday tasks and most importantly, learning more about this career I've chosen to devote my life to. I will be learning how to help children and families. I'm 20 years old and I believe in making a difference!
