Stephen's Fresh Chapter

Cancer has been one of the most challenging experiences in my life.
It brought me from caregiver to patient, from fully independent to needing homecare and on opioids every day for over half a year. It’s slowed me down, and has had major impacts on my life. The climb back has been longer and harder than I’d have imagined.

Cancer took away that independence, instilled anxiety about traveling internationally, social anxiety being around and meeting others, depression and survivors guilt that I struggle with day to day. My physical self still recovering and find it “breath taking” to walk to the post office, whereas I’d rather be finding breathtaking moments in life to take in.

Those of you that know me, know my passion for travel and adventure, to exploring and meeting new people. To those that have seen me, know I tend to hide behind humour and laughter. In reality, fear has gripped me along with every other thing that's happened during this time.

I’m in the process of laying the foundations to move forward.

This February-March, I have been selected to participate in A Fresh Chapter ’s India trip along with 11 other individuals affected by cancer. I will be volunteering in a community in New Delhi, while working on reclaiming my passion back!

To find my tribe and my stride, regaining that independent travel sense in a safe and planned out manner.
To be completely out of my comfort zone, to redefine and learn about more about my post cancer self.
To give of myself to serve others while I’m on this journey.
To also receive and allow others to give in a trusting environment.
To have a once in a life time experience.
To better serve others when I return, continuing the healing and pushing towards giving back to the communities that have helped me.

I also received a scholarship from the Melissa Carroll Legacy Fund  (A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE CARROLL FAMILY!) for a portion of my fees!

The money I raise will go towards participating and airfare for myself to participate. I am still setting my fundraising goal high as the money can go back to that Scholarship that allows for more people to experience the Fresh Chapter program.

 Thank you everyone!
