Our entire lives changed when my niece knocked on my door at 1:30 am on 31 January. She arrived to give me news that her mother, my sister was found unresponsive on her apartment steps and was now in the ED. No one knew what happened or how long she had been sitting there on the steps. When I arrived at the ED they were unsure of what was going on or why she was in this unresponsive state. Many tests were accomplished and she was even transferred to a larger facility to try and piece together this mystery. Well after days of trying to figure all of this out she was diagnosed with DKA (diabetic coma), seizures and brain clots. As you can imagine this has caused lots of damage. She has lost the ability to move her left side, visual impairment and some mental issues. She is fighting hard to come back but this takes time.
Here we are on 24 April and Kelly is still in the hospital, has not been released since 31 January due to all the complications and issues that have come up. She is truly a fighter and I pray daily she will get her life back. I have been able to get what I need for her apartment, supplies and gear that is required for her to come home and be able to function. Of course she needs someone there since she cannot be left alone at this time.
The one thing I need assistance with is getting a vehicle that can be used with a wheelchair. This is one thing that is not covered by anyone and is a HUGE expense. Anything you can donate is greatly appreciated and puts us one step closer to Kelly getting her life back.
So why am I asking for funds? Kelly is now paralyzed on her left side and is visually impaired from the medical issues that took place on 31 Jan 2015. Since that time she has not been able to work and has no money/income coming in. She has a daughter that she is responsible for. Luckily she has family that has assisted with taking care of things while she is unable. When she is released she will require 24 hour care. Again, there is no source of money coming into her household. We have applied for SS and disability but both can take up to a year and are not easy to get. Family has been taking care of all the items we require to provide care for her. The one thing that is hard to get and expensive is a vehicle, no one assists with that. I have contacted all the non-profit organizations that I can find and so far nothing. The only way for her to be able to become productive and live a normal life is to be able to get around when needed. Kelly did not have insurance and was finally approved for Medicaid. Medicaid does not pay for any of the expenses that revolve around vehicles. I appreciate anything that can be done to help my sister. Thank you.
