Support LGBTI+ Australian people of colour

UPDATE: GoFundMe has removed Folau's fundraising page. I'd love to see this campaign reach its $100K goal (and maybe beyond!) to show how the majority of Australians really feel about homophobia and discrimination.

Thank you for your generous donations!

In the wake of his damaging homophobic remarks, and doubling down on his position, Israel Folau has launched a GoFundMe page, seeking $3M to cover his legal costs. He is seeking the general public's money to pay for his crusade, which will solely benefit him, and no-one else.

As a high-profile figure, Folau is attempting to spread a message that his religious freedom is being attacked and silenced, by Rugby Australia's decision to terminate his lucrative contract. What Folau fails to understand, is the difference between holding a personal religious belief and publicly denouncing LGBTQI+ people.

Such public homophobic remarks cause major distress to LGBTQI+ Australians, and increase the likelihood of discrimination and real-life prejudice.

In Australia, compared to the general population, LGBTQI+ people are twice as likely to experience mental health issues, and more than five times likely to attempt suicide. Indigenous populations are twice as likely to commit suicide than the general population. And when it comes to LGBTQI+ indigenous Australians, the numbers are even higher.

Folau's huge profile, especially given he is a person of colour,  is inciting even further hatred and discrimination against an already marginalised community.

I believe most Australians want the best for each other, and when our mates are down, we rally together and help them out. Intersectionality is crucial in raising awareness of and making progress for marginalised people.

This GoFundMe page is set up to raise money for the benefit of LGBTQI+ Australians of colour, with all proceeds going to Black Rainbow.

Black Rainbow is an organisation aimed at reducing suicide rates and providing nationwide support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who identify as LGBTQI+.

"At Black Rainbow, we believe that identifying and addressing the social determinants of health is central to improving Indigenous Australian LGBQTI health outcomes. This includes LGBQTI-phobia and racism. We believe in that by doing so, to be a significance contribution toward preventing suicide and non-suicidal self-harm."

I urge you to share this page with your friends and family, have a conversation with them about the importance of visibility and supporting our marginalised mates. And let's raise as much money as we can for a positive cause.
