Support the Portland Police
Let’s show thanks to the PPB for protecting our safety while supporting our rights.
Over the past several days, I’ve been amazed by their empathy, patience, and professionalism. We have the best police force in the country.
As a Portlander, I have a lot of conflicting feelings about the election. It’s awesome to see our country publicly speak out in support of the rights of all.
But some of these outpourings have demanded a lot from those who can’t just go home to their families when they feel like it: our police. They must stand in the path of flying bottles, rocks, and more, and maintain professionalism while being screamed at. Then they must instantly show compassion and help anyone who’s injured. It’s a ridiculously hard job.
Concretely, this money will go to the Portland Police Association’s Cover Foundation to support men and women of the PPB in times of financial and medical need. The foundation, a 501(c)(3), helps family members to travel when necessary for funerals or surgeries, as well as helping when an officer is injured or killed in the line of duty.
I’m Robb Shecter, a pro bono Portland attorney. I’m the creator of OregonLaws.org, providing better access to the law. While I don’t think that the police (or anyone) is perfect, I believe that it’s important — now — for us to show them our support and say thank you for keeping all of us safe.
