On September 14th, 2018, a severe rainstorm passed through Maple Ridge causing significant damage to many buildings, one of these being the Ridge Meadows Child Development Centre (RMCDC), a non-profit agency servicing children with special needs in the surrounding districts. Their programs include early intervention therapy (speech & language pathology, physiotherapy and occupational therapy), school age therapy, and family support to families who have children living with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and ADHD.
As coverage on Global BC, CBC and other news outlets has highlighted, the damage sustained to the RMCDC facility was significant. Extensive water damage from the flash flood has resulted in flooring, walls, furniture and equipment all needing to be replaced. RMCDC has been told that the building will be inoperable for a minimum of 3 months, causing a significant impact on the children and families it serves.
My children were born prematurely and received critical early intervention therapy from RMCDC. I have seen firsthand how important this agency is and how critical and beneficial their services can be to a child’s development. Although I know the agency has insurance, the damage sustained is significant enough that, as a non-profit organization, there will be a financial burden as a result of the recovery process. Even paying deductibles can be hard on agencies like this.
I am asking for your support to help RMCDC rebuild, let’s turn this bad situation into a happy one with children returning to a bright, fun place to learn and develop!
