Many of you in our community know Tomisa Bates, A selfless, kind person that started the SW Washington Emergency Alerts group on Facebook. she has dedicated countless hours to the community through volunteer work with the police department and sacrifices sleep to help keep our community informed and involved with local emergencies. Aside from all that she has a family life, a personal life, and a work life. She is always busy and does an amazing job juggling her duties. She has had a rough couple years, without airing too much of her personal life some of us know it has not been easy for her or her son. Recently, they lost a companion in their home, a dog named Deacon.
Even with this loss, Tomisa still continues to do what she does best and it would be nice if we could do something to give back to her and help make the rest of 2017 better. Here is her story below:

End of Watch. Deacon Schmeagle Beagle. Rest easy. We have the watch from here.

Letting you guys know it’s been a rough week for me. Sorry I haven’t been around much.
I don’t get too personal here but there are so many people who have always been caring and supportive of our efforts and I need some strength today.
Here are some of my fave pics of my son and his dog brother Deacon. It’s been 11 years together and this will be the first time he has ever left his side and it’s not by his choice.
(My son was nonverbal until we got the dog for him.
He saved our son and brought him back from wherever he was lost inside.
Companion animal doesn’t begin to explain why he is so important to me and us)
Yesterday he was trying so hard to come to us and be with family and I could see he was still hanging on for our sake. I was holding him and he refused to get up or walk and he has never refused a command. I knew he just couldn’t and I honestly believed if he closed his eyes he would never open them again. He wanted relief and I felt him want to just drift away but he was trying for us.
He will never leave his post and is the most selfless companion but there is no life left in it for him. It made my decision.

Today is the day, we are leaving soon. I can tell he has no strength left. I didn’t know it was possible to cry so much this week. For me. For my son. For him. For the last part of our family after the divorce.
Thank you for your service, Deacon, our favorite Deputy. We have the watch from here.  ❤️

I added our story in the comments if anyone is interested. Copied it here.

“For those interested. Here is a little more of our story.
If you have ever considered a companion Animal for a child on the spectrum or with other disabilities. I can’t recommend it enough.

The only thing worse than putting your dog down is putting your child’s dog down.
My son Jaxson is somewhere on the spectrum. He didn’t talk until he was 3.5. He didn’t even seem to understand communication at all. It was noise.
He is deaf on one side. Maybe that’s part of it. He was a nicu baby and with constant hospitalizations and all the pain and bright lights and constant stimulation seemed to have driven him away inside himself. He didn’t even understand facial expressions. Wouldn’t look at me with any understanding. I felt like he was lost somewhere.

When jaxson was 2 I could tell he was frustrated because he couldn’t communicate.
One night I was crying and trying to figure out how to get through to him. I thought about how animals help sometimes and went on Craigslist. I found an ad for a free dog that the owner was giving up because he wanted too much attention and his ear was bent and not perfect.
My sons right ear is folded and small and I decided then that it was our new dog.

We brought him home and Jaxson followed him everywhere. Was completely fascinated by him. He started trying to look him in the eye. Getting in his face. Things I hoped he would do with me. He started automatically letting him outside. Putting food in his bowl. They were communicating in some way. He knew what the dog wanted. They never left each other’s side and one day he was up in the dogs face smiling and he turned and looked at me and smiled like he was telling me he was happy. After that day he started being interested in what I was doing. Started responding to simple sign language and really opened up.
His first real word was “Teacon!”
I believe   that my son has come so far because of Deacon.
He knows when he is getting sick and would always “tell” me. They are like brothers.
Jaxson has grown up so much and honestly doesn’t need him like he once did for security and help but he still loves him.
Deacon has completed his purpose here on earth, to find a lost little boy and bring him home and it’s time to let him rest. He has earned it.
I’m not sure I remember ever being so sad in years.”
