Swimming for the Cure - Cook Strait Crossing

My name is Alon Mandel, 29, and I am an engineer working in the oil and gas industry in Colorado. In my not-too-far background, I was a professional swimmer. The pinnacle of my swimming career include representing my home country of Israel in the 2008 Olympic Games, and being a 4-times NCAA All-American during my time as a student-athlete at the University of Michigan.

After retirement, I went on to pursue another journey in the professional industry, and my goal has been to keep working hard every day, just like my times in the pool. The oil and gas industry includes so many wonderful people and I immidiately felt at home.

After retiring from swimming, I shifted my focus for long-distance swims, the most famous of which was to swim across one of Ocean's Seven Strait-of-Gibraltar in September 2015, swimming from Spain to Morocco in a little over four hours. While that swim was a huge feat, I felt that I should be utilizing my skills for the greater good, namely to help and inspire others by my action.

This has led me to register to swim across Cook Strait in New Zealand (swimming between the north and the south island), this time with the desire to represent a certain group (arbitrarily chosen) in the population, namely, those who suffer from the Parkinson disease.

As a result, I've decided to dedicate my swim for the Parkinson's Research, providing with all donations I am able to raise once the cost of the swim is subsidized. To make sure everything is transparent, I have created the non-profit organization TALON, which is an IRS 501(c)3 recognized non-profit business.

This is why I will need your support on this crazy endeavor, where I will be representing something much bigger than myself yet again (after doing so back as a professional swimmer). I truly believe that in life, each must give back to society and help make it a better place, my humble contribution to that motto is by swimming and helping others to dream of achieving their mighty goals.

Thank you for your support!

Cordially,
Alon Mandel
