Mission Trip to Haiti

Donation protected
Hello my name is Celine Powell. I am a secondary education major freshman, history and special education at Monmouth University. I have always had a passion for helping others whether through community service or mentoring my peers. Ever since I was younger, I have always wanted to go on a mission trip to a different country and help make a difference in anyway that I can. I grew up in a third world country and based on my experiences I have learned to appreciate the life that I have now living in the United States. Being thankful for basic needs such as clothes, water, and even fresh air. Some countries are not fortunate enough to have access to these basic needs. Now that I am in a better position I want to give back and help out in any way which I can to ensure a better life for those indiviuals.

In January of 2010 a massive earthquake struck Haiti at a magnitude of 7.0, killing over 300,000 people and approximately 1.5 million were left homeless. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 80% of the population living under the poverty line. Roughly three-quarters of Haitians are either unemployed or trying to make ends meet in the informal economy. Haiti has no food stamp program, Medicaid, Medicare, National Health Care programs, or Social Security. There are over 400,000 children without parents in Haiti and 1 out of 5 children will die before the age of five. Fewer than 30% of the students reach 6th grade, secondary schools enroll 20% of eligible-age children, and Haiti’s literacy rate is 52.9% (the literacy rate in the USA is 99.99%).  After reading these facts/statistice I started crying because I feel so priviledged at all the opportunities that I have and knowing that I have the chance to save the 1 out of 5 children means a lot to me.

I am more than thankful to be chosen out of numerous applicants as a freshman in the university. The alternative break trip will be from December 30, 2017-January 7, 2018. I have never been apart of a mission trip but I am so excited and honored to be apart of this experience.  I am a strong believer in Christ and I believe that we are all here to help each other as we all come together and unite as one. Going to Haiti will give me the opportunity to help and make a difference in someone`s life. My school and I will be working with Destiny House- an orphange, church, and school for the people in the local community in Canaan (just outside of Port-Au-Prince).  There goals are to rescue children from the streets, feed hungry and destitute kids, provide an education to Haiti`s poorest and provididing on going support to help them succeed in adulthood.

Unfortunately, mission trips such as this, cost a large amount. If anyone feels compelled to give, it would be so greatly appreciated and would mean the world to me. BUT if you do not have the means to donate money, there are so many other ways in which you can support our trip and give back to others such as praying for me and our mission team, sharing my mission trip page, or even by just reading this- raising awareness of the great need that the people have in Haiti.

"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such scarifices, God is pleased."- Hebrews 13:16

Thank you so much and God Bless Your Kind heart.
