National History Day Competition

Donation protected
Hello! I am Elisabeth Huls, a sophomore at Brown County High School. I play varsity tennis and volleyball and participate in student council, academic teams, Spanish Honor Society, Honor Roll, and other community clubs. I have participated in National History Day since seventh grade, with the exception of eighth grade. This year has been an amazing year. I won the paper category not only at the district competition in Nashville, Indiana, but won first in state in Indianapolis, Indiana. Because I am in the Senior Division and won one of the top two spots, I have qualified for Nationals in Washington, D.C.! I could not be more excited! The only obstacle of atteding Nationals is the cost, but I do not intend on having that one obstacle interfere with my goal of reaching top ten in the nation. Let me tell you what my project is about.

My paper this year is about Albion Fellows Bacon. The search to find Albion Fellows Bacon started with my grandmother. She worked for the YWCA, Young Women’s Christian Association, for most of her life and dedicated much of her time to helping women achieve their goals. While learning more about my grandmother’s profession, I stumbled upon Albion Fellows Bacon, the founder of the YWCA. My family has lived in Evansville since the turn of the century and to find an advocate for the working class woman from where my roots are was very exciting. After touring the YWCA and the Albion Fellows Bacon Center, I visited the Willard Library. Willard Library has an extensive collection of Bacon’s original documents. Reading the sprawling handwriting and trying not to tear the wafer thin paper of her essays was like developing a relationship with Bacon and honed my research and writing skills. The experience of spending hours in a library and in front of a computer searching deeper into Bacon’s life is most definitely one that will continue to help me in my other academic endeavors. The YWCA and the Albion Center have changed countless lives. These women who are changed for the better are the reason that Bacon’s work is still living and appreciated. Without these organizations, Evansville’s women and families would not have the support and resources they do today.

Thank you very much for your help on my road to Nationals! I appreciate it very much.
