Tameka Goes To Film School Fund

When I decided to go to college one of my main dilemmas was whether to major in journalism or film. I always thought I wanted to be an actress, but writing had a stronger hold on me. So after earning a journalism scholarship to Wayne State University, I immersed myself in the world of words and the art of broadcast journalism. Then New York City beckoned and I answered that call. After completing my education at Fordham University I was afforded the opportunity to work at WCBS Radio, several public relations firms, The Girl Scouts of the USA, Scholastic and many other amazing companies in between.
Then the recession hit. Workers all over had a hard time getting jobs and especially people who worked at nonprofits and public relations firms (ME) so I had to reinvent myself and use my skills to make my way in another business sector. I now have my own social media marketing business, but as any entrepreneur knows, being the boss can be challenging when you’re the only one charged with bringing in new business. As soon as you get great projects, you can lose them due to budget cuts and the realignment of your client’s goals.
That brings me here. My love for film has never died. I no longer envision myself on the big screen (much), but I know I want to write screenplays and quite possibly for television. I already write books but I know that having as many skillsets in your pocket can only work in your favor so I applied to the New York Film Academy. I was accepted! Great, right? Well, it is, but… The tuition is something that I don’t have lying around and the program starts on Jan 23, 2017! Running a fledgling business, paying New York rent and funding my own book publishing efforts hasn’t exactly left me flush. I need help in order to accept this wonderful opportunity of a year long screenwriting program.
I have never been great at asking for help, but I am getting better with it as life goes on and this is something I am very passionate about so I thought I would put myself out there. Also, several friends suggested it and said they would support me because they believe in my talent. I couldn’t let them down, now could I?
If you would help to invest in my education so I can gain the skills I need to create great scripts, I would be super appreciative. We need more diverse writers in Hollywood writer’s rooms! Help me get there, please!
Sincerely,
Tameka
