KNOW THE TERMS:
-FPV: What is FPV? FPV stands for First Person View, and this basically means the pilot of the quadcopter or plane is flying the plane not by looking AT it, but by looking WITH it! The pilot flies the aircraft by looking at a LIVE video feed from a camera mounted on the UAV, be it via wearing goggles with the image in it, or a screen the pilot looks at! Heres a photo of team pilot Riley wearing some FPV goggles and flying a quadcopter.
-MULTICOPTER: Also known as multirotor, a multicopter is a helicopter with multiple propellors and motors. They can have 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, or even more motors on them- Here are some classic multirotor setups.
-UAV: What in the heck does that stand for? UAV stands for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, and is the umbrella term for basically all unmanned planes, helicopters, and multicopters of all makes, types, and sizes. We often use the term UAV instead of drone, as the public tend to have a better view on the word UAV vs Drone, even though they are the same thing.
RILEY MORGAN-
My name is Riley Morgan and I've been building, designing, flying, and crashing drones since I was thirteen! I love flight- I just love the feeling of being in the air, theres just nothing like it. I build quadcopters, planes, tricopters, hexacopters & more, and have been into the drone industry since 2013, when I built and flew one of my first quadcopters at the Drones and Aerial Robotics Conference at NYU in front of hundreds of people. I gained some serious press attention during this conference, having many articles written on me in Makezine, the NY times, National Geographic, and more! Since then I've flown FPV around the entire world: India, Mexico, New Zealand, Colorado, NYC and more. About 10 months ago I brought together my close friends Will & Mitchell and we started Team Icarus, shortly thereafter including my good friend Jared Klinger. We've been building and flying together ever since! Below is a photo of me demoing at DARC 2013.
WILL DEITCH-
I'm Will Deitch and I have been managing the financial side of Team Icarus for 10 months. I do reviews and camera work as well as pilot a custom TBS Discovery. I am one of Team Icarus's founding members and am 16 years old. Any other questions that we do not address in this article regarding how your money will be spent can be directed to [email redacted]
MITCHELL KLECKNER-
My name is Mitchell Kleckner, and I am 15 years old. I am a founder and direct public relations for for Team Icarus, and have been so for 10 months. I have built and fly a Team Black Sheep Discovery quadcopter. I help scout sites for recording videos as well.
Jared Klinger-
My name is Jared Klinger. I 15 and joined Team Icarus shortly after its beginning. I make sure that we operate in a legal and safe way. I have been a pilot for about 4 years and have build multiple balsa planes and a homemade 3D printed Hovership FPV quadcopter.
Where is the money going?
The money is going towards operating costs including transportation, replacement parts, and domain name. We're going to put this money towards the team as a whole, and use it on our current projects, our future ideas, and of course replacement parts for projects that had "rough landings!" Some upcoming projects include a search and rescue quadcopter, a search and rescue flying wing aircraft, an aircraft with solar panels, and of course an online store in which we will sell tricopter frameplates that will be developed with this money, apparel, 3D printed parts, and more!
