Help "Sugar Rush" go to Globals!
Donation protected
Sugar Rush are an amazingly creative team of 6th and 7th grade girls who are proud to be from E.V. Cain STEM Charter Middle School, in Auburn, CA!
After working incredibly hard for several months we competed successfully at both Regional and State Tournaments for Destination Imagination and earned an invitation to represent California in the Global Finals, in Knoxville, Tennessee. We are so excited!!!
But we need your help! Please read our story and make a donation - absolutely every single dollar counts!
Destination Imagination is a creativity and critical thinking competition that employs all aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and layers them with fine arts and creativity! It's a work-out for our brains!
In September 2014 Sugar Rush chose the fine arts challenge and we spent the next 4 months creating a production about a character who has a phobia of music and singing. We created a musical, authoring our own script, writing songs, music, building our own sets and making costumes. We also designed and built a unique musical instrument (that actually plays music!) and a magic illusion, in which we transformed a leaf from the magical tree into the stringed instrument... in the blink of an eye. It looked amazing and even got gasps from the audience!
Our team's set was a giant pop-up book. It stands 5 feet tall and each scene has pop-up scenery as we turn the pages.
We spent several weeks studying pop-up book designs (including many from local pop-up book artist David A. Carter) and engineering the book to work smoothly. We put in close to 40 hours over spring break to work on this! We love DI!!! And the best bit... the team is required to work independently, so all of the ideas have to come from the kids alone! No adult input allowed! We had fun with that - and are told that this results in a level of creativity that most adults could only dream of!
Destination Imagination has also taught us teamwork, leadership skills, and self-confidence. These are skills we think will really help us to make the world a better place as we grow up.
But now we need your help. For the team and team manager to go to Globals we have to raise almost $12,000 . This will pay for:
Registration, University Housing and Meals - $750
Return Airfare to Knoxville - $650
Car Rental Expenses - $150
Shipping of Props - $200
Miscellaneous expenses - $200
We are working hard as a team to run bake sales, ice cream sales, host a magic show, a spaghetti feed and a craft sale. But if you can help us, either by sponsoring one of the above items for one team member... or even by donating just $5 it will all help us to reach our goal.
You can donate here, or make a tax deductable donation directly to our school - marked D.I. Sugar Rush.
We thank you for reading our "sweet" story and making a donation :-)
Here is a picture of us on competition day with one of our team managers - Mr. Scott!
Sugar Rush working hard to build our set...
Team work gets it done....
Concentrating....
Building a magical tree is all in a day's work...
The Monster in our play represents the main character's greatest fear... music. So what could be more appropriate that a mask made from vinyl records? The label shows "You can't argue with a sick mind".
Thanks for watching!
