Our dear friend, Terri, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and colleague, has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Terri, a highly respected 3rd grade teacher at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, has taught for over 30 years in both the public and private settings. Terri is an expert at delivering the perfect mix of freedom, responsibility and care to help her young students become the best possible version of themselves. Terri's love for her students has been returned with equal love and respect from the community. Her tremendous talent in the classroom has been recognized as she is a past recipient of the highly selective Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching.
Near the end of September 2016, Terri began with a series of unexplained illnesses. After months of doctors visits, endless research, constant worry and never-ceasing exhaustion, she was sadly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is an aggressive form of cancer that affects the blood and bone morrow. Currently, AML has no broad effective treatments. Each case of AML is almost as unique as each of the patients struck with the disease. It is this genetic complexity that makes AML so difficult to treat. The likelihood that Terri is facing a bone marrow transplant is high. A disease that is difficult to treat translates into a disease that is expensive to treat.
Terri and her family have just begun the long journey of treatment. Terri's treatment is over 2 hours away from her home and has, thus far, required lengthy hospitalization. Not only does her family face quickly mounting medical bills for her treatment, but they also face the immediate burden of travel expenses while they try to maintain normalcy at home for their young high schooler.
Because of the extreme difficulty and custom treatments needed for each individual case of AML, the financial expenses are impossible to predict other than to know that the Conklin family is going to need all the financial help they can get.
Thank you so much for thinking of Terri and her family in this time of need. Giving to them financially will help them in ways that words cannot express.
