The Climate Pilgrimage

Tax deductible
Starting in October, pilgrims are walking 1,500 kilometers (almost 950 miles) for our climate.  We’re starting at the Vatican and walking all the way to Katowice, Poland.

Katowice is where UN negotiators will plan how their countries put the Paris climate agreement into action.
There’s plenty up for discussion, and plenty that could change by the time it’s all done.  We’re walking to tell the world that Catholics are watching, and we want climate justice now.

In the past year, Europe and Pakistan has experienced incredible heatwaves, the United States has seen deadly flooding in Houston, and Australia has suffered a devastating drought. We’re walking for climate justice because we love our neighbors–wherever they might be.

We’re being led by Yeb Saño, the former lead climate negotiator for the Philippines.  A few years ago, a mega-storm called Typhoon Hayian (or Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines) hit Yeb’s home community. Thousands of people lost their lives.

Climate change is making storms like this more and more likely for the Philippines.

Since then, Yeb has devoted every waking moment to securing a safer planet for his neighbors and people like them all around the world. He’s spent months at sea as a witness to environmental destruction, and he’s already walked on one pilgrimage, from Rome to Paris for the Paris climate agreement.  This walk will build on that journey.

We’re carrying prayers on our backs.

We’re inviting people to send us their prayers for the climate crisis, and we’re writing them on prayer ribbons that we tie to our backpacks. These prayers will be carried into the UN summit.

We’re sharing our message as Catholics, as people of the global south, and as members of the human family. Our faith is a faith of love. It calls us to love our neighbors, the most vulnerable above all. Solving climate change is love in action.

We’re walking about 25 kilometers each day and sleeping on parish floors, camp bunks, and wherever we can find a space.

Your help is needed.

Please help us meet the goal of raising $15,000 to equip and support the pilgrimage. All amounts, whether big or small, are welcomed and appreciated.

$10, $50, or $500, your gift will help pilgrims carry the message of climate justice for all to the UN and beyond. Please support this important journey of hope.
