The Eddie Melo Legacy Organization

Eddie "L'ouragan" ("the hurricane") Melo was a Canadian Boxing middle weight and light heavy weight Champ. He was a huge star in boxing turning pro at just 17 years old. Born in Ribiero Quente, Azores  Portugal he immigrated to Canada at a young age and found himself being taken under the wing of Earle O'Sullivan, fondly known as "Sully". Eddie began training at Sully's Ozzington street gym in Toronto and rose quickly in gaining recognition as a fast and hard hitter, gaining the name "L'Ouragan" by Quebec fans meaning "The Hurricane" for his fast hands and foot work as well as his ability to put his opponents to the canvas quickly. Eddie was murdered on April 6 2001 in broad daylight, he was the most amazing father, son, brother and friend. Humbled from the start he was grateful for the opportunities he was given by Sully for taking him in and teaching him how to box and stay off the streets and out of trouble. We are creating the EDDIE MELO LEGACY ORGANIZATION in memory of him and to honour his name and the man that he was to his core which was to help people and motivate  them to achieve their dreams and goals. This organization will focus on giving back to young amature boxers by supporting and sponsoring them in their boxing endeavours as well as to provide new equipment and awards in his name, and keeping them on the right track. It will also be helping the young survivours whose parents have been a victim of murder. This cause is very close to home for us as young athletes should have all the opportunities to box and be involved in such an incredible sport without any barriers. The children that have lost a parent to a homicide will also recieve support either for further education, sports or other financial needs, based on individual basis. The funds being raised this year will directly go to benefit the youth boxers and their gyms as well the individual needs of the youth who have been affected by murder.  Having your support would mean the world to us as we can continue to give back to our communities the way that Eddie gave back to his throughout his time here. To be able to help those and ease some financial burdens is crucial to see these youth succeed in life when they already have to face so much adversity at such a young age. Keeping Eddie Melo's name alive and in peoples hearts and in the boxing gyms is another integral aspect of this organization as he should always be remembered for the amazing man that he was, even to those that never got the opportunity to be in his presence and experience him first hand.  We are truly grateful on behalf of The Eddie Melo Legacy Organization for any and all support you are able to give to help the at risk youth in our community
