Last year at The Juilliard School!

Antes de comenzar, quisiera agradecer de antemano tu atención, sin ella, este deseo quedaría reducido a un simple pensamiento.

Mi nombre es Lúa Mayenco, tengo 21 años y soy de Madrid. Hace casi tres años me trasladé a la ciudad de Nueva York para estudiar en la Juilliard School, escuela que rápidamente transformaría mi vida para siempre. Tras haber finalizado mis estudios de formación profesional en el conservatorio de danza Carmen Amaya, me convertí en la primera bailarina española en pisar los mágicos pasillos de esta universidad neoyorquina repleta de sorpresas. 

Tras recibir la carta de aceptación y el coste anual aproximado, comprendí que la situación económica de mi familia nunca me permitiría finalizar los cuatro años de los que se compone el programa de danza, pero incluso si sólo podía asistir durante un curso, era una oportunidad que no podía dejar escapar. De este modo, a través de mucho esfuerzo, numerosas cartas, solicitudes, concursos y una gran parte de nuestros ahorros, logramos recolectar suficiente dinero para cubrir los gastos del primer año. Sin embargo, he aquí el problema: rápidamente me enamoré sin remedio de la escuela. Entre sus paredes, la danza pasa a ser algo más que una serie de figuras y líneas, allí, la danza se convierte en un lenguaje universal. Cada paso es dotado de un único significado, creando una relación indestructible entre artista y público, conectando almas a través de pura emoción.  Cómo podría explicar con palabras la confianza y el apoyo que me ha otorgado la Juilliard School. Este lugar, me sostiene cada vez que desafío los límites de la imaginación, me cura las heridas tras las más arriesgadas aventuras, me da alas para que pierda el miedo a caer y me recuerda que el poder del arte es infinito. En otras palabras, no hay nada que desee más que continuar caminando por su interminable laberinto de posibilidades.

Mi segundo año fue posible únicamente gracias al increíble apoyo que recibí a través de esta infraestructura. A comienzos del 2017 abrí esta campaña Crowdfunding y, gracias a la difusión que recibió a través del peródico El Confidencial, RTVE, Radio Internacional y otras emisoras, cientos de personas se decidieron a formar parte de este sueño. En especial, he de destacar el gran apoyo ofrecido por el Teatro Pavón Kamikaze. Su extraordinario equipo me ofreció una gran ayuda en el verano de 2017 a través de su programa "Desembarco de la Danza", el cual recolectó más de 1000€ para financiar mi segundo curso académico en Nueva York. 

Ahora mismo he regresado a Madrid tras casi tres años de infinito aprendizaje, emocionantes colaboraciones, muchas actuaciones e incontables horas de trabajo dentro y fuera del estudio de danza, y pese a todo, no puedo evitar emocionarme al pensar que quizás nunca pueda regresar al lugar que me hizo despertar como artista. Actualmente la matrícula ha ascendido a 47.000$ y tan sólo me otorgan 35.000$ de beca, por lo que he de recaudar alrededor de 10.000$ para poder regresar en septiembre. De nuevo, pido cualquier ayuda o consejo que podáis ofrecerme. Ya he podido comprobar que cada granito de arena es esencial en esta gran campaña. Jamás podré agradeceros lo suficiente lo que ya habéis hecho por mí, pero he de volver a pedir vuestra ayuda, pues vosotros sois mi más valioso recurso. GRACIAS POR TODO y espero que continuéis a mi lado. 

Si mi aventura al otro lado del Atlántico continúa, durante los próximos meses iré compartiendo mis nuevas creaciones y coreografías. Por si no lo había mencionado ya, es a lo que querría dedicarme algún día. Crear, dibujar en el espacio mis ideas, preocupaciones y secreto. Compartir, intercambiar, conversar con el público a través de vibrantes movimientos. Quisiera ser capaz de otorgar la oportunidad de liberar lo que este mundo ya nos ha obligado a encerrar. Aquí, confían en mí, sólo necesito que confíes tú también.

First of all, I would like to thank you for your attention, without it, this dream would be reduced to a simple thought.

My name is Lúa Mayenco, I'm 21 years old and I'm from Madrid, Spain. Almost three years ago I moved to the city of New York to study at The Juilliard School, and in the blink of an eye, this conservatory transformed my life completely. After finishing my dance studies at the Professional Conservatory of Dance Carmen Amaya (Madrid), I became the first Spanish dancer to go through the magical hallways of this surprising American university.
Once I received my acceptance letter and the approximate cost of attendance, I realized that my family´s economic situation would never allow me to complete the four-year dance program offered by the school, but even if I could only enroll for one year it was an opportunity that couldn't be wasted. This way, with a lot of effort, letters, applications, contests and a great part of our savings, we collected enough money to fund my freshman year. However, here is the problem: I fell crazy in love with the school in just a few days. Inside its studios, dance is something more than figures and lines; it becomes a universal language. Every single step is provided a unique meaning, creating an indestructible bond between artist and audience, connecting people´s souls trough the most powerful emotions. I wonder I could ever explain within these lines the support and confidence Juilliard has provided me. This place holds me while I challenge the limits of imagination, it heals my wounds after the most dangerous adventures, it gives me wings to help me forget the fear of falling and reminds me the unlimited power of art. In other words, there is nothing I would enjoy more than exploring Juilliard´s indecipherable maze for two more years.

My second year was made possible thanks to the incredible support I received through this platform. At the beginning of 2017, I opened this crowdfunding campaign and, thanks to its dissemination through the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, and the Spanish Radio channels RTVE, Radio Internacional and Radio Nacional de España, hundreds of people decided to take part of my dream. In particular, I must highlight the huge support offered by the Theater Teatro Pavón Kamikaze of Madrid. Its amazing team offered me their help during the Summer of 2017, donating more than 1,000€ thanks to their show “Desembarco de la danza” and giving me the strength to face my second year at The Juilliard School.

Currently, I just got back to Madrid after almost three years of infinite learning, exciting collaborations, many performances and uncountable hours of hard work in and outside of the dance studios. Nevertheless, I can’t stop myself from getting emotional every time that I remember that I might never return to that place that opened my eyes and gave me an artistic voice. Tuition is now over 47,000$ and the scholarship Juilliard offers me only covers 35,000$. This way, I must collect another 10,000$ before next September. Once more, I will ask you for any piece of advice or any help you might be able to offer. I already realized how essential is every single one of your contributions in this big campaign. I will never be able to thank you enough everything you already did for me, but I must ask for your support again as you are my most precious resource. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING, I hope you stay by my side.

If my adventure at the other side of the Atlantic continues, I will share with you all my new creations and choreographies throughout the year. Just in case I didn't mention it, this is what I would like to do in the future. Create; draw my ideas, concerns and secrets around the space. Share, exchange and conversate with the audience through exciting movements. I want to give you a chance to express what this world already told us to keep for ourselves. Here, at Juilliard, they trust me. Now, I need you to do the same thing.
