I am Paul and I live with my special needs cats in a rural area of Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Some years back when I worked as an Animal Welfare Officer I came across two kittens with cat flu – they were ill and in desperate need of care, so I took them home and called them Mavis and Vera. Both recovered and lived happy long lives. Mavis and Vera changed my life, and I decided that this is what I wanted to do – to care for sick and special needs cats who are very difficult to home and are often put to sleep.
A few years ago , I adopted my soul mate Chance, my gorgeous handsome tabby boy. I came across Chance on Facebook. Cats without Homes were looking for a forever home for him. Chance had horrific injuries following an RTA and veterinary opinion was that he would never walk again unaided and his future looked bleak .
Chance defied the diagnosis – I was never happier to see Chance walk and even manage to run. Sadly Chance passed away in September 2019..Since adopting Chance I have adopted many special needs cats and currently have 14 Whatever my financial situation, they have all had the best care and lots of love and lived their lives to the full, and they are of course my family – I live for my cats.
I currently rent a property which is ideal for my special needs cats, many of whom have disabilities and some need regular ongoing medical care. However, my landlord plans to sell the property and has been threatening to do so for a couple of years. I constantly worry about the future of my cats because, as we all know, it is almost impossible to rent accommodation which allows animals, let alone 14 cats.
My most recent rescue is a tuxie Felix, a stray who hung around the garden for a while and was fed by me in the garden. Gradually I gained his trust, and he is now a fully paid up member of the feline gang.
All my cats are neutered and vaccinated and get good vet care. But paying bills is becoming increasingly difficult (a large portion of my salary goes towards rent), and to avoid a last minute disaster I must find myself and my furry family a permanent residence. I am in desperate need of funding to secure a home for myself and the cats, as I can’t afford the high rent. I am facing an uncertain future, as rents continue to rise and it is impossible to find other suitable rental accommodation, especially with pets. The only alternative is to purchase a small piece of land that can be secured for the cats and to put a prefab or log cabin on site, or purchase a small house with a little land in a quiet rural location outside Co Wicklow, which is expensive – I am happy to move so long as I have somewhere to take my cats.
I need to do something now in order to avoid eviction notice at some future date with nowhere to go with the cats. My cats are my family, and rehoming them is an option which is unthinkable. I desperately want to avoid such a situation and must do something now but I need help.
Thank you for listening, and I would be very grateful for any help you can offer, thank you.
