The Mike Lawlor Cancer Campaign
Donation protected
My dad Mike was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in January 2016, aged 54. Since then, he has endured and faced numerous obstacles, as the cancer spread to his spine, pelvis and most recently his eye. He has continued to fight this battle with amazing courage, positivity and strength, and has continuously beaten the odds that were originally given to him.
In December 2018, his condition caused his health to rapidly deteriorate and since then has remained in a palliative care unit, as he requires constant, intense care and pain management at this point.
He regularly has to attend hospital appointments in Cork for monthly treatments and consultations, which are incredibly expensive and not covered by insurance. This is in addition to the travel, parking, medication, prescription and personal care costs.
Home modifications may also be necessary in order to facilitate his current condition which now requires more frequent wheelchair use. We also want to install a sufficient heating system, which we do not have at the moment, as the cancer leaves him feeling cold more than a healthy person would and we would like him to be as comfortable as possible when he is at home.
While it is not something we ever thought we would find ourselves doing, the financial costs and medical expenses that come with this illness have left us seeking the help of our friends and family through this campaign. As Mike's wife/my mom also suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, it is increasingly difficult to meet these expenses when both are unable to work. Her condition further reinforces the need for home modifications also.
On behalf of myself and my family, we would absolutely appreciate any donation no matter how small and we are extremely grateful for any support we receive.
Thank you.
