The Shye school project, Rwanda

Horsham Coffee Roaster is a speciality coffee roastery based in West Sussex specialising in creating relationships with coffee producers. We have been visiting Gishyta Washing Station in Rwanda for 3 years, buying all their high quality coffee. A coffee washing station is a collection and processing facility for coffee farmers in the local area. Gishyita co-operative has 86 members and working with several hundred local coffee farmers.

This year we asked to visit the local village school. It is a large school, each class has around 60 pupils.  The children start at age 5 and finish their education at age 18. While visiting the school we asked the teachers if there was anything we could help with. They showed us the primary school building which was built during the 1930s and is in desperate need of urgent repair work. The children were happy, and very excited to see us - but the school building is literally falling down around them. The concrete at the top edges of the roof is the most worrying issue, there are loose chunks that fall out on a regular basis on the inside of the classrooms and outside where the children play. The concrete floors are badly worn with lots of holes and many of the windows have broken panes of glass. We promised to help them with the repair project via a direct contribution from our business and through a fundraising campaign.
