The Skittleworms take Kansas City!

Destination Imagination (DI) is an interdisciplinary creative problem solving competition incorporating elements of arts, engineering, science, and improvisation. Students work for up to 6 months on long term challenges and present the challenge solutions in tournaments across the state and country.  Top scoring teams receive an invitation to compete against the world's best teams at DI Global Finals in May.

The Skittleworms are a Destination Imagination team that has been together for five years, since they were 8 years old.  They have achieved extraordinary success in their time together as a team, winning their Massachusetts Regional Championship for four out of their five years of competition.  They are curious, bold, hardworking, and dedicated to the creative process in which they build on each other's skills, talents, and ideas to create things together that are bigger, better, and bolder than they could have made on their own.

For their challenge solution this year they were tasked with researching a medical mystery that affects a human character and with creating a technological representation of its symptoms.  Not content with the first dozen or more ideas that came to mind, they kept researching until they came up with a condition that truly fascinated them -- mirror touch synesthesia. Over the course of their creative journey, they composed an original song and built an instrument to play it on, built a device that used pneumatic tubes to activate LED panels, and made a giant pirate head which reverses to reveal the interior of a brain with thousands of neurons -- hand-drawn by the team.  And as always with DI, they conceived, designed, and built every element of their challenge entirely by themselves, with no adult input or help.

Their passion for arts, technology, and the collaborative creative process inspires their parents and families every day. After turning down a chance to compete at DI Global Finals last year, they are eager to celebrate their amazing achievements in the company of the country's best young makers and artists. As DI has moved their international competition and celebration from Tennessee to Kansas City, Missouri, there are new horizons to be explored for this team of creative superstars!  We would greatly appreciate your help in allowing them to get there.
